Goldenrod: much more than just pretty for the garden

Goldenrod is a native plant with a distinctive appearance. Its golden flowers are unique and always catch the eye in landscapes. It was only in more recent times that the plant received the attention in naturopathy that it really deserved. It is true that its Latin name indicates that it was already used by the Romans, but not with the same intensity as today. In phytotherapy, it is the plant used to treat kidney and bladder diseases and is one of the most important plants in modern practice. It flushes the urinary tract and helps the body improve its elimination through the urine.

Facts about the goldenrod

What is goldenrod?

The true goldenrod is a herbaceous plant that grows up to 100cm high. It is native to our country, but in recent years it has been increasingly pushed back by its Canadian relative. Goldenrod often grows in large clumps and decorates whole areas with its bright, golden yellow hue. The flowers are panicle-like and form intense yellow, fan-like associations at the head of the plant. The leaves are rather stalked and ovate in the lower part of the stem, but become narrower and lanceolate in the ascending part. The plant blooms in our area between July and October, which is also the harvest period. All parts of the plant are used.

General and medicinal properties of Solidago virgaurea

The basic knowledge

Urinary

Goldenrod is diuretic. It actively stimulates the kidney with its active ingredients to bring more filtration performance. The result is a better cleaning of the body, more pollutants are filtered and excreted and the amount of urine increases - provided you drink enough!

Antimicrobial

Goldenrod is antimicrobial. It acts against fungi, bacteria and viruses. Especially in the urinary tract, bacteria are often responsible for infections of the lower or upper urinary tract. Goldenrod contains active substances that act against these pathogens and increases the amount of urine. Thus, the urinary tract is flushed better and the pathogens find it difficult to adhere to the mucous membrane.

Litholytic

Goldenrod is litholytic. Even preventively, goldenrod ensures that the kidney is better flushed and stones can not form. In addition, it actively counteracts the formation of stones and thus reduces the basic risk of having to suffer from a kidney stone.

Solidago virgaurea : Ingredients

Goldenrod contains a whole lot of active ingredients that are known to us today. These include:

  • Phenol glycosides,
such as leiocarposide and virgaureoside A
  • Flavonoids like rutin
  • Essential oils
  • Quercetin
  • Triterpene saponins

Goldenrod: effect for body and mind

Goldenrod is a real jack-of-all-trades with its complex of active ingredients. In various experiments, its diuretic effect has been proven in humans and animals. The leiocarposide, as well as the contained saponins and flavonoids are responsible for this. In addition, it has been found to have anti-inflammatory, analgesic and mild antispasmodic effects. Its phenolic constituents also give it an antioxidant ability that could support its anti-inflammatory powers. Because of this spectrum of activity, goldenrod is perfect for treating urogenital issues. It is the de facto base of almost any blend intended to treat the urinary tract in any way. Due to the fact that it has a diuretic and flushing effect, i.e. also increases the amount of urine, it is often used in purification cures for the treatment of underlying metabolic diseases.

Fields of application in naturopathy

[Solidago virgaurea]

Due to its potent complex of active ingredients, it has a fairly wide applicability in practice. It is often prescribed in mixtures.

Solidago virgaurea for kidney problems

Goldenrod is considered the medicinal plant for the treatment of kidney diseases. Therefore, in case of diffuse complaints with the kidney, frequent inflammations, water retention or for increased flushing, goldenrod is often used. It increases the amount of urine, thus improving the flushing and combats infections with its antimicrobial properties.

Goldenrod for gout, rheumatism & arthritis

The topics of gout, rheumatism and arthritis are very often about metabolic problems. In gout, for example, the uric acid levels are too high, so that this acid precipitates crystalline in the joint and causes massive inflammation with pain. Goldenrod now stimulates the filtration capacity of the kidney and supports it in filtering out such substances better in order to excrete them. This directly addresses the cause of the problem and can alleviate the discomfort.

Solidago virgaurea for headaches

Some headaches may also be due to toxins of endo- or exogenous metabolism. This is known after alcohol consumption. Goldenrod helps the kidneys to filter out and eliminate these toxins more effectively. Thus, the concentration of toxins decreases and the headache subsides.

Goldenrod for metabolic disorders

With metabolic complaints in general, there is usually the problem that the endogenous metabolism already stresses organs such as the liver so that they become sluggish and weaken. Goldenrod helps to increase the excretion of metabolically stressful substances through the urine. This relieves the body and organs such as the liver have little burden.

Solidago virgaurea for inflammation of the urinary tract & mucous membranes

Inflammations of the urinary tract are mostly caused by microbial causes. Most often fungi or bacteria infect the urinary tract and cause inflammation of the mucous membranes. Goldenrod acts directly against these infections, killing germs and at the same time stimulating the kidneys to produce more urine. This increased amount of urine flushes the urinary tract better and thus the pathogens out. Fungi and bacteria are thus less able to multiply and the mucous membranes are less inflamed.

Goldenrod for eczema & skin diseases

Many skin diseases are caused by an overloaded excretory metabolism. Slag remains in the body and is excreted from it through the skin by means of a rash. If the conventional excretory pathways are relieved and the kidneys are stimulated in their work, the skin is relieved again and the rashes disappear.

Notes on the use of Solidago virgaurea

Goldenrod is an acute therapeutic agent and is used as a cure. For this purpose, medicine teas, drop mixtures or tablets are often applied. Multiple daily application is common in these phases. Continuous use is not advised, as goldenrod saponins are irritant therapy for the kidneys. Too much in the context of a permanent medication can also have negative consequences.

Goldenrod during pregnancy & lactation

Even during pregnancy and breastfeeding, goldenrod can be taken without hesitation. Especially for swollen feet of expectant mothers, it has even proven to help that the legs are slimmer again and the water retention is removed.
