Pomegranate: The fruit of eternal youth

Pomegranate is considered the plant of the goddess of love herself. It is associated in our culture with the womb of the Holy Mother Mary. It is considered the fertility symbol of art, represents power beauty and eternal life. Its name is derived from Latin granum = grain and refers to the granular interior of the pomegranate. Many see in a cut open pomegranate the analogy to a fresh, reproducing cluster of cells and thus associate it directly with the idea of life, birth and emergence. Originally, the pomegranate originated in what is now Iran, Afghanistan and northern India. Today it is cultivated throughout the Mediterranean region. In medicine, pomegranate is used mainly as a source of estrogen. However, pomegranate has also shown a positive effect on prostate problems, including prostate cancer, in various studies conducted in recent years. It is said to protect against prostate cancer and delay recurrences. In other cancers such as leukemia, pomegranate has shown a positive effect. The cancer cells regress or are brought towards a controlled cell death.

Pomegranate facts

Did you know that...

... a large part of imported pomegranates is used for cosmetics production?
... pomegranate seeds are still used today to dye carpets?
... pomegranates and the pomegranate share the word origin?

What is pomegranate?

The pomegranate is a large shrub or small tree about 1-5m high with four-sided, later rounded branches and gray-brown bark. It most likely originates from the Near East. Its name Punica granatum reminds of the ancient Punia, as Tunisia was called in former times. In our latitudes, the pomegranate is found as a potted plant, as it is not winter-hardy and must be placed under shelter. The plant has a great history and already plays a role in Greek mythology, when Hades the god of the underworld put 3 pomegranate seeds in the mouth of his later wife Persephone so that she ate something. The agreement with her mother Demeter, the fertility goddess, was that Persephone, should she eat something, must also stay in the underworld. What is exciting about this image is the reference to Hades, the world of the dead, and Demeter, the fertility goddess and mistress of agriculture. So the image is much about life, becoming and passing away and immortality. Pomegranate has always been considered the fruit of eternal youth. Many of its modern applications today reflect this.

Pomegranate: effect for body and mind

The pomegranate is a true fountain of youth for body and mind. Its effect is legendary. It contains trace elements such as iron, potassium, calcium and magnesium, which the body needs for its cell, energy and nerve metabolism. Its contained antioxidants such as vitamin C, polyphenols, flavonoids and anthocyanins serve as radical scavengers, thus protecting against oxidative stress on the cell membrane and have a significant part in its rejuvenating effect, thus also having a preventive effect on cancer. Cerebrosides also act in this direction. Only they regenerate especially the nervous system and help repair damage to it. This antioxidant effect causes additional good results in the treatment of cardiovascular problems. The patients of a meta-study were able to successfully reduce their systolic, as well as diastolic blood pressure, increase the blood flow to the heart muscle and reduce existing deposits in the carotid arteries by up to 35% within one year! Since pomegranate contains estrogen-like substances, it has a harmonizing effect on mild menopausal symptoms. In addition, these phytoestrogens have been found to have an anticancer growth inhibitory effect on estrogen-dependent tumors. Studies regarding the efficacy of pomegranate in prostate problems have substantiated the suspicion that prostate-specific PSA levels showed positive responses to treatments with pomegranate. However, conclusive studies are still pending. The oil from its seeds is markedly anti-inflammatory. Applied externally, pomegranate oil has a very good effect on the skin. It promotes regeneration, is anti-inflammatory and improves the appearance of the skin. Even with acne it shows a good effect and improves the complexion. Due to its high antioxidant effect on the organism, people also describe a significantly increased sense of well-being. And in a healthy body, also lives a contented soul.

Fields of application in naturopathy

[Punica granatum]
Since pomegranate is a real treasure chest of ingredients, its applications are also broad. Generally speaking, pomegranate is an all-round health cure for the body. Of course, it has medical indications for which it is traditionally used therapeutically.

Pomegranate during weight loss

Pomegranate is often recommended for diets. It offers a huge amount of minerals and secondary plant substances that are excellent for metabolism. Especially the antioxidants optimize the cell metabolism and drive it up. The anthocyanins contained, such as myrtillin, which takes its name from the blueberry, are known to stimulate pancreatic function and thus improve digestion - an effect that is particularly welcome in diets.

Punica Granatum for cardiovascular problems

Cardiovascular disease remains the number one killer in the industrialized world. A meta-study found that pomegranate juice drunk over a year had enormous, positive effects on the cardiovascular system. In the patients in the studies, both diastolic and systolic blood pressure decreased and blood flow to the heart muscle was significantly improved. Most impressively, however, vascular deposits in the carotid arteries decreased by 35% in the context of arteriosclerosis.

Pomegranate for acne

Acne is an inflammatory disease of the skin. It is accompanied by severe pimple formation and the appearance of scars. Pomegranate oil, due to its anti-inflammatory polyphenols and anthocyanins, can significantly improve the disease process and promotes the regeneration of scarred skin.

Pomegranate for hormone balance

Pomegranate is a good choice for minor hormonal weaknesses. Its estrogen-like phytohormones gently regulate here, promote well-being and reduce oxidative stress. Pomegranate is also worth considering for men. In naturopathy, it is also used in the stronger sex to improve general well-being and for its antioxidant properties. It reduces the effect of stress hormones and contains steroids that the body can use as a basic building block for adrenal cortical hormones.

Pomegranate preventive as cancer prevention

As an excellent source of antioxidants such as vitamin C, pomegranate is basically interesting for the topic of cancer. Its value as a preventive agent comes from the effects of anthocyanins, polyphenols, ascorbic acid and flavonoids. But pomegranate has also shown good effects in the treatment of cancer. In various studies it showed its positive effect on estrogen-dependent growing mammary carcinomas. Its phytoestrogens blocked the cancer-promoting effect of estrogen and thus helped to slow down growth. In addition, there was a positive effect on tumor-induced neoangiogenesis, i.e. the formation of new blood vessels with the help of which the cancer attempts to feed itself. This new vessel formation was inhibited and the spread of the tumor thus slowed down. In the case of lymphatic cancer cells, it was observed that they reacted to the polyphenols contained either by regressing to a healthy cell or by initiating controlled cell death.

Pomegranate for menopausal symptoms

The estrogens contained in pomegranate are rather weak. Therefore, it is often used in the pre-menopausal phase to alleviate mild early symptoms of the change. For stronger symptoms, other hormone-active plants should be added. However, the overall positive effect of pomegranate is well suited to help you get through this phase with well-being and health. In cosmetic series, pomegranate is very often recommended for the skin of women after menopause.

Notes on the use of pomegranate

Pomegranate can be a regular part of the morning breakfast as a fruit. Either you drink pomegranate juice with your breakfast or sprinkle the seeds over your cereal. In organic daily cosmetics, too, there is now a wide range of products intended for everyday use. Especially if you want to use the antioxidant long-term effects for skin and body, you should take or apply the pomegranate regularly. Undesirable effects could not be found in studies so far.

Punica granatum during pregnancy & lactation

During pregnancy, the need for trace elements and vitamins for the pregnant woman increases dramatically. Pomegranate is considered extremely healthy for pregnant women and is traditionally recommended in Iran. There is nothing to prevent the consumption of pomegranates during pregnancy.

Pomegranate when taking pills

Basically, it can be said that the effect of the pill is not influenced by pomegranate. The dosage of hormones contained in the pill are too high for that.
