Heartburn affects sufferers in their daily lives by causing stabbing pain behind the breastbone or in the upper abdomen, as well as acid regurgitation. Causes are often lavish and fatty meals, stimulants, obesity, or Anti-Stress. These factors cause the stomach to produce too much acid and the stomach acid flows back into the esophagus. This is called reflux.

In the case of heartburn, medications are often taken to counteract excessive acid production or probiotics are taken for intestinal cleansing. Probiotics promote the colonization of beneficial intestinal bacteria and promote balance in the gastrointestinal tract. In addition, some small helpers from the household can also provide relief from the symptoms.

Home remedies for drinking

Water

The liquid dilutes the stomach acid and helps to return it to the stomach. Drink in small, steady sips and avoid carbonated beverages at all costs.

Tea

The changeover to winter time can be a particular burden on people who wake up much too early in the morning anyway. The time change usually causes these people to wake up another hour earlier. To counteract this, you can already try to go to bed half an hour later today. This makes the transition to the new time rhythm smoother and allows your body and mind to adjust better to the new sleeping conditions.

Milk

Milk is a very controversial home remedy for heartburn. Here, everyone must find out for themselves whether the discomfort becomes weaker or stronger after drinking milk.

Some sufferers swear by a fresh glass of milk because it "puts out the fire" and has a cooling effect. The proteins contained in milk help stimulate the muscles of the esophageal sphincter to close better. This prevents the unpleasant reflux.

Others, however, tell of aggravation of symptoms by milk, since it has a slightly acidic ph value and is very fatty. Feeding acid with acid is obviously an unpromising idea. The high fat content relaxes the muscles and therefore the sphincter of the esophagus. The stomach acid can therefore flow back down the esophagus more easily and heartburn is promoted instead of relieved.

Healing earth

You may not find healing clay in every household, but it is definitely a purchase worth making. Used internally, it can help with heartburn, digestive problems and diarrhea. Externally, it can be applied to the skin as a mask, for example, to remove grease. Remove sebum and bacteria and soothe the skin.

As a home remedy for heartburn, healing clay is dissolved in water and helps neutralize stomach acid.

Food home remedies

Flaxseed

Flax seeds are a true superfood due to their high omega 3 content, but also because they contain mucilage, which protects the stomach and intestinal walls. In addition, flax seeds support the development of a healthy intestinal flora.

You can simply sprinkle ground flaxseeds over your porridge or salad to relieve heartburn.

Almonds, sunflower seeds & oatmeal

A handful of almonds, which should be neither salted nor sweetened, often show a good effect when used against heartburn. Chew about 4-6 almonds and swallow the food pulp in small quantities. The mass helps to bind excess stomach acid.

Alternatively, sunflower seeds or oatmeal cooked as porridge have the same effect.

Potatoes & Whole Grain Products

The starch contained in these foods also serves to bind excess stomach acid. Whole grain products are also good for prevention, as they prevent too much stomach acid.

But beware! Sourdough can even stimulate acid production and thus increase your complaints. So make sure that your wholemeal bread does not contain sourdough.

Bananas

Bananas also contain starch and additionally also potassium. The potassium helps to neutralize the stomach acid. If you suffer from heartburn, you should only eat ripe bananas. Unripe fruits can increase the discomfort.

Chewing gum

Chewing gum stimulates the formation of saliva. Saliva is slightly alkaline and can therefore neutralize stomach acid. In addition, the more saliva helps to lead the gastric acid back into the stomach.

Chewing gums can well be used as an accompanying measure for heartburn, but as an acute remedy for severe heartburn they do not show enough effect.

What exactly is heartburn?

It refers to the reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus, sometimes even into the mouth. This results in acid regurgitation and burning pain behind the breastbone. Occasional heartburn is physiological and harmless, but if it occurs more often, it may be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. However, reflux disease is usually diagnosed only when clinical symptoms are already present. The reason for reflux is the difference in pressure between the thorax and the stomach, as well as a weakening of the esophageal sphincter.

Causes of heartburn are often sumptuous & fatty meals, stimulants or stress. These triggers can cause the stomach to produce too much acid or empty slowly. Therefore, and due to dysfunction of the esophageal sphincter, obesity, disturbed gastric emptying or other reasons, the acidic stomach acid then flows back into the esophagus and then causes the familiar symptoms.

Risk factors for heartburn include being overweight, sitting for long periods in a bent-over position, stress, poor diet or pregnancy. However, these factors can be prevented with the help of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
