Coffee bush: the medicinal plant for sensitive senses

The coffee bush has had a great career. It found its way to us in the 17th century. At the beginning, however, it was reserved exclusively for the rich upper class. However, coffee quickly caught on and became a drink for the masses. Written sources in Switzerland show that the ruling aristocracy observed the spread of 'coffee addiction' among the common people with misgivings, but then tolerated it, as this addiction seemed to make the population more efficient and alert!

Facts about the coffee bush

Did you know that...

... coffee is the most commonly drunk hot beverage in Germany? On average, 164 liters are drunk per capita!
... the coffee country Italy is not even among the top 13 in worldwide per capita consumption?
... the coffee bush can grow up to 8m high under optimal conditions?
... the active alkaloid caffeine from coffee is identical to teein from the tea plant.

What is the coffee bush?

The coffee bush is up to 3-5 meters high and has a central main shoot from which the branches descend horizontally over several levels. On these branches grow red berries the size of a fingernail, the seeds of which are now processed into coffee powder. Coffee belongs to the madder family and originates from the mountain forests of Ethiopia. As early as the 14th century, it was brought from there to the Arab region, which is how it got its name. From there, coffee increasingly spread throughout the world. At the beginning of the use of the Coffea arabica plant, only the leaves of the shrub were used. They also contain the awakening caffeine, but they are not as acidic as the seeds of the fruit. It is believed that the fruit seeds were discovered later by the Sufis in Arabia, who roasted and ground them to discover the coffee we know today. Through roasting, they lost their acidity and developed the incomparable rust aromas that are largely responsible for the success of coffee. The Coffea arabica variety is considered the most noble coffee in the world. However, only 5% of the annual production is considered to be of truly high quality. Unfortunately, in the retail trade, the name Arabica is already sold to the customer as a guarantee of quality.

General and medicinal properties of the Coffea arabica plant

The basic knowledge

Stimulating

Coffee is stimulating. Especially when a slight tiredness spreads, a cup of coffee reliably helps to get fit again. The caffeine it contains has an activating effect on the central nervous system, stimulates cardiovascular activity and thus releases energy.

Digestive

Coffea is also digestive. The bitter substances stimulate the flow of bile and thus promote the digestion of food. In addition, coffee increases the amount of gastric acid, which further aids in digestion.

Awakening

Coffee is an awakener. Especially when you have consumed large amounts of coffee, you notice that you can no longer think about sleeping. This is usually accompanied by a certain feeling of restlessness. This is due to the fact that the sympathetic nervous system is activated by coffee. The sympathetic nervous system is our activity nervous system and gets us going.

Antioxidant

Coffee is antioxidant. Due to its bitter substances, trace elements and vitamins, coffee has an antioxidant and radical scavenging effect on the body. The vitamins contained are all extremely important for the nervous system and stabilize nerve metabolism.

Coffee bush: ingredients

Pure coffee beans contain some substances that have an effect on the central nervous system. However, the bitter substances of coffee are only formed during roasting.

You can find the following ingredients in the Coffea arabica plant:

  • Vitamin B2 riboflavin
  • Vitamin B3 niacin
  • Vitamin B5 pantothenic acid
  • Vitamin B6- pyridoxine
  • Caffeic acids
  • Alkaloids like caffeine
  • Bitterness and aromas only develop after roasting
  • Trace elements such as calcium, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium. Manganese, iron, sulfur

Coffee bush: effect for body and mind

Coffee has a stimulating effect on the whole body and also the mind. Due to the fact that the contained caffeine as an alkaloid is a substance that acts directly in the central nervous system, the effects also affect all physical structures. Basically, nerve cells exchange messenger substances and consume energy in the process. The more work is done here, the more a substance called adenosine is produced. Adenosine's job is to block receptors so that central nervous system can no longer use that receptor. The purpose is to protect the CNS from overexertion. Caffeine now behaves competitively to this adenosine, i.e. it strives towards the same receptor as adenosine, only stronger. It eventually displaces the adenosine and blocks the receptor itself. The only thing is that caffeine has no protective effect on the CNS, so the nervous system can continue to run hot. The result is that the nervous system remains active, keeping the person alert and fit. Once the effect of caffeine wears off, the person notices more fatigue than before. With frequent consumption of caffeine, the body soon reacts to this by forming new receptors to which the adenosine can dock again. The effect of the caffeine therefore wears off, or you have to take more caffeine. This is called the habituation effect. The bitter substances of the roasted coffee beans now cause an increased attack of bile, which improves digestion. Through its activating effect in the CNS, coffee causes an increase in gastrin, a hormone that acts on the stomach. Gastrin causes increased activity of the stomach muscles and it increases the amount of hydrochloric acid and pepsinogen in the stomach. Pepsinogen becomes pepsin and is an enzyme involved in protein digestion. Its antioxidant properties and vitamin content has led to coffee consumption being thoroughly recommended as healthy today. Its consumption reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, strokes and liver cancer. However, the amount of 2-3 cups of coffee per day should not be exceeded.

Fields of application in naturopathy

[Coffea arabica]
Coffee as a product of the roasted coffee bean is basically stimulating. The following indications result from the use of spagyric or homeopathic preparations. Here Coffea is used therapeutically paradoxically in small quantities, in which it is successfully used against the problems that it would cause itself in high concentration. In recent years, amazing successes have been achieved again and again.

Coffee shrub for sleep problems

Due to its strong relation to the central nervous system and overstimulation of the CNS, Coffea is used naturopathically a lot in mixtures or alone for sleep problems. It is important here that sleep is not found due to inner restlessness and overstimulation. Often the condition is still accompanied by cold sweats and stomach problems.

Coffee shrub for anxiety and panic attacks

The overstimulation of the nervous system can also be reflected in psychological symptoms. Susceptible individuals of experience anxiety or panic attacks, perhaps a hunted situation comes up again and puts the affected out of action. Coffea is a good solution here, as it calms the CNS, decreases excitability, and thus helps control panic attacks. Panic attacks are known to rise. However, the higher the threshold, the lower the excitability at the starting point, the less likely the panic attack is to erupt and can no longer be controlled. Continuous intake of Coffea is definitely recommended in these phases.

Coffee bush for nervous palpitations

The heart is also constantly addressed by our vegetative nervous system. It needs to be activated when we need to run and shut down when we relax. Constant nervous palpitations are an indication of chronic stress. Perhaps one is simply working too hard, or there is a psychological problem such as unprocessed grief or anxiety. So it should be urgently looked into what is causing it. The essence of the Coffea arabica plant calms the nervous system and thus reduces the effect of the vegetative nervous system on the heart. Your nervous palpitations can become much less or even go away with Coffea.

Coffee shrub for headaches

Many headaches come from the muscles of the neck being too hard, too tight. Often 'something is sitting on the back of your neck.' The expression describes pressure that is exerted psychologically on the person in question. Usually this takes place at work and one gets into stress. This stress is expressed by tension of the skeletal muscles. In the neck one notices it particularly, since the beginnings of the neck musculature at the skull sit with increased tension headache to cause can. Basically, in such situations to seek rest and relaxation. As a remedy, Coffea comes into play here again, as it directly influences the stress mechanism in the central nervous system, thus reducing the physical symptoms such as neck pain and headaches.

Coffee bush for nervousness

Anyone who has already experienced how it feels to have drunk significantly too much coffee knows what kind of nervousness is spoken of. One is cold sweaty, has a strongly beating heart, is shaky and feels slightly nauseous. It also reminds a bit of stage fright, which is related to this condition. The mind is wide awake, one is sensitive to stimuli and can hardly stand them or wants to avoid them. In this condition Coffea spagyrically prepared has proven very useful, because it mirrors the body exactly this condition and paradoxically reduces these symptoms. The nervousness decreases, the heart calms down and the cold sweating subsides.

Coffee shrub for heartburn

Heartburn is often a result of stress and nervous overstimulation. There was too much that affected you, you had to be concentrated and tense for too long. The heartburn in this case comes from excessive activation by the vagus nerve. This nerve is directly connected to the autonomic nervous system and mediates activity and relaxation. During long periods of stress, it mediates activity for a long time and this affects the stomach in such a way that it spasms because its muscles are tense and produce too much acid. This gastric acid is now being pushed up. It is important here that the cause is in the CNS, that is, stress. Coffea is here a remedy which calms the CNS, reduces the stress effect and so relieves the heartburn.

Notes on the use of Coffea arabica

Coffee today is mostly drunk by itself. Here, an amount of 2-3 cups per day or the equivalent amount of 300mg of caffeine should not be exceeded. In medicine, coffee is used as a pure substance only in the form of coffee charcoal in cases of poisoning or infectious intestinal diseases, usually with diarrhea symptoms. For this purpose, ready-to-use preparations are available in pharmacies. In naturopathy, coffee or Coffea is often used as homeopathic or spagyric preparations as part of so-called complex remedies, i.e. mixed preparations. Mainly it is about problems that have their cause in the CNS, are stress-associated and where restlessness and overstimulation are in the foreground.

Coffee shrub in pregnancy & lactation

Coffee is not a problem during pregnancy and breastfeeding. However, the daily amount of caffeine should be limited to 200mg. Remember, energy drinks, real tea and cola also contain caffeine.

Drinking coffee while taking Coffea: thoughts of homeopathy

Some homeopaths advise against consuming coffee during treatment with homeopathic high potencies, as coffee may weaken or even cancel the effect of the high potencies.
