Cat's whiskers: Medicinal plant for kidney disease

Cat's whiskers is a classic medicinal plant used for kidney and bladder ailments. In its homeland, tropical Asia and India, it has been used for a long time. In the 19th century, the plant also reached Europe through the English and quickly gained attention here. In its homeland, as in ours, it is considered a first-rate medicinal plant for the urogenital tract, and its medicinal indications are considered to be well established and researched. Today it can be purchased in almost every occidental pharmacy and is often combined with other classics such as bearberry leaves, goldenrod or nettle.

What is the cat's whiskers?

Cat's beard is a perennial, herbaceous plant of the labiates family. Originally, the plant is native to tropical Asia and India. It is mostly found in Java and Sumatra, which has earned it the nickname Java tea. Cat's whiskers plants grow up to 60cm tall and have characteristic false whorls as stamens. These resemble the whiskers of a cat and let one or the other ask which tubes he could clean with it. The flowers of the plant are classic white to purple. The leaves are green, with a serrated edge and arranged in a circle below the flowers.

General and medicinal properties of Orthosiphon stamineus

The basic knowledge

Diuretic

Cat's whiskers are diuretic. It stimulates the kidney to produce more urine. The patient has to go to the toilet more often and more fluid flushes the urinary tract. Pathogens can thus settle worse and more urinary substances are excreted.

Antimicrobial

Cat's whiskers are antimicrobial. Here, the active ingredients act against bacteria and viruses, reduce their population and help to better flush them out.

Antispasmodic

Cat's whiskers are antispasmodic. Fine muscles, such as those of the urinary tract or bile ducts are positively affected by it. They can relax better and are less prone to cramps. Digestion and urination can thus proceed without complications.

Orthosiphon stamineus: Ingredients

The ingredients of the cat's beard add up to a very good mixture for diseases of the uro-genital tract. The following substances are included:
  • Essential oils
  • Saponins
  • Flavonoids
  • Potassium

Cat beard: Effect for body and mind

Cat's whiskers have been known in their native regions for a very long time for their outstanding effect on the urogenital tract. In the kidney it stimulates the formation of urine and thus the filtration of blood. Thus, it increases the purification of the body from waste products from intermediate metabolism. Urinary substances of any kind are thus increasingly excreted and the organism is relieved. Due to this strong diuresis effect, it becomes inevitable to adjust the amount of drinking during the treatment with cat's whiskers. The increased amount of urine now further thoroughly flushes the draining urinary tract and thus reduces the chance of pathogens to settle in the mucous membrane of the bladder and cause an inflammatory infection. In addition, cat's whiskers have a mild antispasmodic effect. People take advantage of this in combination with the flushing properties of the plant to treat mild kidney gout. The increased amount of urine with the antispasmodic action of the plant thus favor the sponging of the grits.

Fields of application in naturopathy

[Orthosiphon stamineus]
Cat's whiskers is a specialist among medicinal plants. Therefore, the main indications revolve around urogenital issues.

Orthosiphon stamineus for kidney disease

The cat's whiskers stimulate the kidneys with its ingredients to increase their diuresis capacity massively. This leads to the kidney filtering more blood and squeezing out more urine. The body is thus better cleansed and supported in excreting urinary substances.

Cat's whiskers for urinary tract infections

Most urinary tract infections take place on the surface of the mucous membranes lining the urinary tract. Pathogens such as fungi, bacteria and viruses settle here, inflame these mucous membranes and cause symptoms. Because the cat's whiskers increase the amount of urine, the mucous membranes are flushed better. The pathogens can not adhere to the mucosa, their number is reduced and the immune system can better cope with the remaining.

Orthosiphon stamineus in renal gravels

Kidney gravel is the prelude to kidney stones. These are solid stones that linger and grow in the renal pelvis. Because the kidney stones are still quite small, there is a chance that they will be flushed out. The cat's whiskers help here by increasing the quantity of urine on the one hand and on the other hand by having an antispasmodic effect on the urinary tract. Flushed grit can thus slide through the urinary tract without cramping and find its way out without complications. The gravel can then not grow further and the risk of a real kidney stone has been reduced.

Notes on the use of cat whiskers

Application of the cat's whiskers should always be accompanied by increased drinking.
