Menstrual cramps

Definition

Menstruation, also called period, rule or day, is the monthly bleeding from the vagina. This bleeding serves to break down the lining of the uterus if fertilization has not occurred during ovulation.

Cycle

The female cycle is the number of days from the start of one menstruation to the onset of the next and is divided into 4 phases. The cycle length is on average about 28 days, but can also vary between 21 and 40 days.

Symptoms

There are a variety of different symptoms before, during and after your period. The most common symptoms include abdominal pain/cramps, headaches, nausea, fatigue and back pain.

Measures

There are different ways to relieve menstrual pain. While for some women heat already helps as a remedy for menstrual pain, other women need stronger painkillers that are tailored to the respective symptoms.

Definition: period discomfort

Massive impairment in everyday life

Period pain (dysmenorrhea) refers to the various symptoms that occur before, during and after menstruation due to the cycle. Menstrual pain is divided into two different types:

Primary dysmenorrhea: Primary menstrual pain is the result of a natural process in the female body and already occurs during the first period. The complaints often accompany the affected women into menopause.

Secondary dysmenorrhea: Secondary period pain, on the other hand, is often due to an organic cause. This can be inflammation, fibroids, endometriosis or other diseases - but also ill-fitting contraceptives such as the IUD or a copper chain can cause this pain.

Facts about menstrual cramps

Did you know that...

... the first rule is called menarche?

... menstrual cramps can manifest themselves in the form of up to 150 different symptoms?

... there are 385 unique proteins in menstrual blood that are not found in the normal bloodstream or in vaginal fluid? (https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3494145/)

... an extreme form of period pain is endometriosis, which affects about 15% of women?

This is what happens during the period

The uterus is lined with a mucous membrane (endometrium) that protects it and facilitates the implantation of fertilized eggs. If fertilization does not occur during ovulation, part of the endometrium is shed at the end of the female cycle and excreted as menstrual bleeding. Prostaglandins - hormone-like messenger substances - play an important role in this process because they influence the sensation of pain and ensure that the uterine muscles contract at irregular intervals to expel the mucosa. These muscle movements can be felt as a slight pulling sensation, but also as strong, even labor-like cramps.

What is PMS?

Premenstrual syndrome, or PMS for short, is often mentioned in connection with menstruation. It occurs about two weeks to shortly before the start of menstruation and is also associated with physical and psychological symptoms. However, once menstruation starts, PMS symptoms usually subside. The exact cause of premenstrual syndrome is not yet fully understood from a medical point of view, but it is suspected that cycle-related fluctuations in the blood level of female hormones may play a significant role.
