Painful swelling - how naturopathy can help with gout

In Germany alone, around 950,000 people suffer from gout. Men are affected by the metabolic disease more than twice as often as women. The disease used to be known as the "disease of kings", as only the rich could afford gout-promoting foods. But what exactly are the causes and symptoms of gout and how do everyday habits influence the course of the disease? We'll tell you all about it in this blog post, in which you'll also learn a lot about natural remedies and tips.

With natural methods, such as the individual spagyric mixtures from Zimply Natural, your complaints can be relieved naturally and sustainably.

What is gout anyway?

If you suffer from gout, you probably know what it's like: a symptom-free period and then another painful attack of gout - an agonizing cycle. Around 1-2 % of German adults suffer from gout, but what exactly is gout? The disease is based on a metabolic disorder that results in an accumulation of uric acid crystals in your joints. Uric acid is normally excreted via the kidneys and is a metabolic product. However, there can be certain components that can throw the whole thing out of balance and then the painful disease gout develops. You can find out how you can combat this and what natural home remedies are available in this blog post.

that dinosaurs are also believed to have suffered from gout?

Deformations and the presence of urinary crystals have also been found in fossil bones.

These are the typical causes and warning signs of gout

What are the typical triggers of gout?

The most common and main cause of gout is a disorder in uric acid metabolism. Normally, your body produces uric acid as a by-product when breaking down purine, which is found in many foods. However, if too much is released or the kidneys do not excrete enough uric acid, this can lead to complications. One of these complications is an increase in uric acid in the blood, which can lead to the formation of uric acid crystals in the joints. These are then deposited and irritate movement, which consequently leads to pain. Studies have shown that there is also a genetic predisposition to gout. This means that if many of your family members suffer from gout, there is an increased likelihood that you will also develop symptoms. Of course, there are warning signs that you should look out for to enable early diagnosis.

You should look out for these warning signs

The first attack of gout usually occurs at night or in the early morning and is largely characterized by pain in the foot. The big toe joint is most frequently affected, which swells and turns red or blue. In most cases, even just touching it is too much, as the pain can be really extreme. Other symptoms are that you find it difficult to move the affected joint and the pain lasts for several hours or days. Attacks of gout occur repeatedly after the first occurrence, whereby the triggers are varied and often occur in your everyday life.

Did you know ...

that gout in the big toe joint is called podagra?

The word "podagra" comes from ancient Greece and literally means "foot trap".

Gout triggers that occur in your diet

If you suffer from gout, you have probably already been advised to avoid foods containing purines as much as possible. But what are these products and why should you avoid them? Well, uric acid is a metabolic product that is released when purine is broken down. So if you eat a lot of foods with a high purine content, a lot of uric acid is produced. With gout, your kidneys can't work fast enough to expel enough, so uric acid crystals build up in your joints. Foods that contain a lot of purine include offal, red meat, alcohol, yeast extract and products with a high fructose content. Certain types of fish such as herring, tuna or sardines also have a high purine content. You should also not underestimate sugary drinks such as soft drinks or foods with a high corn syrup content. If you suffer from gout, it would therefore be beneficial to avoid these products as much as possible to prevent gout attacks.

Natural home remedies and natural remedies for gout

It has been proven that older people feel less thirsty. However, this is very bad news for those suffering from gout, as drinking plenty of fluids can work wonders. An increased intake of water can help to flush uric acid out of the body and thus reduce its concentration in the blood. Fruits such as sour cherries and pineapple are thought to have an anti-inflammatory effect and could reduce gout attacks. If you are more inclined towards natural remedies, you could also try ginger or turmeric. These two remedies are said to have similar effects to the previously mentioned fruits. Obesity is also a risk factor for gout, so a balanced diet and good weight management are also important.

Did you know ...

that the number of cases of gout is increasing?

This is particularly the case in industrialized countries and is attributed to obesity and unhealthy eating habits.

The difference between gout and rheumatism

Gout is often described as a rheumatic disease. In fact, scientists are not entirely in agreement as to where gout should be classified. What is certain is that gout and Rheumatism in that the former is a metabolic disorder and rheumatism is an autoimmune disease. In both diseases, the joints are attacked; in gout by uric acid crystals and in rheumatism by the body's own immune system. Immunesystem. However, gout usually only affects a few joints, most commonly the big toe joint, whereas rheumatism affects several joints at once. In addition, an attack of gout is temporary and occurs acutely, whereas rheumatism is a chronic disease and the pain is persistent.

How your doctor diagnoses gout

The exact procedure for your gout diagnosis

If you suspect that you have gout after your first attack, it is advisable to see your doctor immediately. He or she will first talk to you about your symptoms and then proceed with an examination of the affected area of the body. This is usually the big toe, but there are exceptions. He will take a picture of the redness, inflammation and swelling and check the mobility of your joint. In addition to the physical examination, your doctor will most likely order a blood count for further diagnostics to determine your uric acid level. If this is elevated, a sample of the joint fluid from the affected area can be taken to be on the safe side. Your doctor will prick your joint with a thin needle and remove some fluid. If there is an increased concentration of uric acid and uric acid crystals can be found, the diagnosis will be gout.

Diseases that you should not confuse with gout

In addition to these tests, your doctor will need to rule out the possibility that your symptoms could be caused by other conditions. One condition that can have similar symptoms to gout is pseudogout. It is so called because it can also cause inflammation and pain in joints, but differs in one crucial respect: the pain is caused by calcium crystals and not uric acid crystals. If several joints are affected, the rheumatoid arthritis which, however, is an autoimmune disease. There is also septic arthritis, in which an infection enters the joint and causes joint pain, swelling and inflammation. As you can see, a careful diagnosis is necessary in order to start a suitable therapy and positively influence the course of the disease.

Ways to prevent gout

Below is a brief summary of the points mentioned so far for preventing gout. The first and most important factor is diet in relation to purines. Avoiding or reducing the consumption of purine-containing foods will only benefit you and can help prevent gout attacks. An adequate intake of water reduces the concentration of uric acid in the blood and can lead to the uric acid crystals being flushed out. A healthy body weight and sustainable weight management are beneficial, as obesity is a risk factor for gout. Alcohol is also an underestimated cause of gout attacks, as it reduces the excretion of uric acid via the liver. This increases the concentration of uric acid and causes even more uric acid crystals to form. If you want to supplement your treatment with natural home remedies or naturopathy, ginger and turmeric are good approaches and can help to reduce gout attacks. There are also other medicinal plants that are beneficial for the treatment of gout.

These medicinal plants can help you with your gout symptoms

In gout, people have the problem of not being able to excrete uric acid at a normal level. The Card supports the excretory metabolism with its bitter substances, so that the body can get rid of uric acid and rebalance the pH values of the tissue. But the phenols it contains help to reduce rheumatic inflammation, such as gout, so that the pain subsides.

Tartar is dissolving. It is used to treat age-related deposits. It dissolves them and reduces the body's tendency to harden. Tartar is anti-sclerotic. Sclerosis plays a particularly important role in blood vessels. Vessels lose their flexibility and become hard. Tartaric acid counteracts this, keeps the vessels soft and ensures that hardening is minimized.

Due to its blood-purifying effect Juniper also often used for gout. It helps the body to urinate the uric acid and activates the kidneys so that they can excrete the uric acid in the urine. This reduces the uric acid levels in the blood and alleviates gout.

Hemp is analgesic. Thanks to the active ingredients it contains, hemp can reduce the sensation of pain in the brain and help people to tolerate it. The effect is particularly helpful for chronic pain patients.

Celandine is antispasmodic. As celandine belongs to the poppy family, it contains alkaloids that have an antispasmodic effect on the nervous system. This is used to treat spasms of the involuntary muscles, e.g. gastrointestinal cramps. Celandine relaxes the muscles and digestion can return to normal.

Arnica is pain-relieving. It promotes the healing of the tissue, promotes the circulation of tissue fluids and thus reduces the swelling of the injury. This reduces the pressure in the tissue and the pain subsides. Arnica is also anti-inflammatory. Inflamed tissue hurts, swells and loses its ability to function. It counteracts these symptoms and cares for the injured tissue so that the inflammation subsides quickly.

FAQ: Questions and answers about gout

Can gout also occur in children?

Yes, in rare cases gout can also occur in children. This is known as Lesch-Nyhan syndrome (LNS) and involves an increased production of uric acid. The disease can occur as early as infancy and manifests itself by the age of two at the latest. Those affected have a constant urge to hurt themselves and bite their own hands, for example. However, it is a very rare genetic defect that can be easily diagnosed and mainly affects boys.

What concomitant diseases can occur with gout?

Severe courses of gout can lead to kidney disease. A large proportion of the uric acid produced by the body is excreted via the kidneys. Chronic and untreated gout can lead to so-called gouty kidney disease, i.e. renal insufficiency. Other accompanying diseases can be metabolic disorders as well as cardiovascular diseases such as high blood pressure, heart attacks and strokes.

Can a vegetarian or vegan lifestyle help prevent gout?

Studies have shown that a vegan or vegetarian diet can help to reduce the risk of gout. Even though soy products contain a lot of purine, they are still much better in terms of content than meat products. Avoiding foods such as milk, fish and meat can reduce the risk or even alleviate an existing condition.
