Pansies: Colorful help for acne & Co.
Because of its attractive, colorful flowering pansy is widely used in our garden and balcony plants. Almost in every garden center it is offered for sale and because of its popularity it is also sold in abundance, but what few people know is that the pansy is one of the most important medicinal plants for the treatment of skin diseases. Due to the fact that it can do good to any type of skin, pansy is a much used ingredient in organic cosmetics. But besides its good effect on our skin, pansy also offers a lot of potential when used internally.
Did you know that...
... Viola can also be an important medicinal plant for vaginal infections in women?
... only the wild pansy has a medicinal effect?
... the name pansy comes from the petals? The wide, lower petal is the stepmother because it hides the smaller, upper 'daughters'!
What are pansies?
Pansy is a plant up to 40cm high, usually an annual. It is herbaceous in growth and loses its compact shape when kept for several years. Since it is sensitive to cold, you should make sure that it can be protected in winter or come through the cold season as a potted plant in a winter garden. Pansy likes acidic soil, so it is advisable to water it strictly with soft, low-lime rainwater, otherwise it will quickly wither and die. Today, pansies are mainly planted as potted plants or flat ground covers. Because of their beautiful blooms, they are often the first choice for grave care.
General and medicinal properties of pansies
The pansy is anti-inflammatory. This is used especially for the treatment of skin diseases and mucous membranes. In naturopathy, it is therefore often used for catarrh of the respiratory tract and the urogenital tract.
The pansy is expectorant. Its ingredients can loosen stuck mucus so that the patient can cough them up. But pansy is also used for the tendency to mucus to reduce the formation of mucus.
The pansy is antimicrobial. Thus, the violet can be used for bacterial infections. Especially on the skin there are many bacteria that promote, trigger or support inflammation. The violet is a helpful plant here, because it is effective against the pathogens.
The pansy is immunosuppressive. In the case of inflammations caused by an overactive immune system, such as rheumatism, the pansy is therefore traditionally used internally in naturopathy.
Viola tricolor: Ingredients
Pansy has been popular as a medicinal plant for long centuries and is an integral part of the phytotherapeutic spectrum. There are not many studies regarding its medicinal use, which is mainly based on experience. However, the ingredients have been well researched in recent years and provide information about the possible applications.
You can find the following ingredients in the medicinal plant pansy:
- Salicylic acid
- Vitamin A and C
- Hemolytic peptides
Pansy: Effect for body and mind
Pansy is a plant for the sensitive soul and the beau spirit. This plant is much about care of skins, the visible and internal. In cosmetics and dermatology Viola tricolor has a firm place, because it shows good effects against all kinds of skin rashes. It is used for psoriasis and neurodermatitis as well as for acne and eczema. Internally, it is used to loosen phlegm in the case of a stiff cough, but pansies are also often added to mixtures for the treatment of mucous membranes of the urogenital tract or intestines. In the Middle Ages, candied violet flowers were also used to decorate and color puddings - most likely, however, only because of the impressive sky blue that its flowers provide. Beauty, care and well-being are the central themes represented by the violet.

Fields of application in naturopathy
The pansy is known to most people only as an ornamental plant on the balcony. Yet it has a centuries-old tradition and application in natural medicine. Its areas of application are skins, inside and outside.
Pansies for eczema
Eczemas are often dry skin rashes, which have their cause in the metabolism. Here, the skin is used as a detoxification organ and reacts with the formation of eczema. Since the field violet with its antioxidants such as vitamin C and vitamin A is considered antioxidant and metabolism-supporting, it is often used to support detoxification cures, which should relieve the skin and alleviate eczema.
Pansy for skin problems & acne
The best-known application of pansy is so-called seborrheic eczema, i.e. skin inflammations accompanied by bright and red spots and greasy scales. The pansy is often used internally as a tea or externally for dabbing. Often viola is also a component of special ointments and creams. Its anti-inflammatory salicylic acid and antimicrobial flavonoids help to reduce inflammation in the skin, so that the skin can regenerate better.
Pansies for rheumatism
Rheumatism in its broadest sense is an inflammation of the internal membranes. The cause is unknown, but the mechanism is an autoimmune inflammatory reaction. Since pansy basically counteracts inflammation with its flavonoids, antioxidants and the salicylic acid it contains, it is a good choice for treating rheumatic diseases. Many pharmacy-based naturopathic medicines designed to treat rheumatism therefore also often contain Viola tricolor as an ingredient.
Pansies for cradle cap
Cradle cap is a mostly itchy rash that often affects the baby's head and therefore often causes the children to scratch their heads bloody. The salicylic acid contained has an anti-inflammatory and also blood-thinning effect, so that the itching and rash recede.
Pansies for immunodeficiency
Since viola contains vitamins A and C as well as various flavonoids, it has a pronounced immune-boosting effect. It is therefore repeatedly included in cold tea blends. Especially when immune deficiencies lead to an increased tendency to catch a cold, viola is definitely a plant to think about. Its expectorant, antimicrobial properties make it additionally very suitable for treating bronchial infections with mucus.
Pansies for urinary tract infections
For urinary tract infections, pansy has a good reputation. Its salicylic acid, flavonoids and hemolytic peptides form an optimal mixture to relieve the mucous membrane of the genitourinary tract in infectious and non-infectious inflammation and inhibit inflammation. In addition, field violet has been found to have a diuretic effect, meaning that the plant has a diuretic and flushing effect on the kidney-bladder system. On the one hand, this flushes out pathogens and makes it more difficult for them to settle in the mucous membrane and inflame it.
Pansy for stress & restlessness
Already in the Middle Ages, violet was used for neurodermatitis, restlessness of children and even epilepsy. It is said to have a balancing effect on the nervous system of sensitive minds. In any case, its antioxidant ingredients such as vitamins C and A are a good support when free radicals caused by stress become a problem for the organism. Gladly recommended here simply the regular, daily consumption of a pansy tea.
Tips for the use of pansies
The pansy petals are often added to tea mixtures in dried form. As candied flowers, you can still buy them in specialty stores. The tea should be drunk throughout the day. Since pansy is still very popular in naturopathy today, it is more often a component of ready-to-use pharmaceutical mixtures available in pharmacies. The dosage here depends on the preparation and differs from drug to drug.
Pansies in pregnancy & lactation
Pansy has not been part of any studies, but due to lack of data, it is therefore not recommended to be taken during pregnancy. However, applied externally, it should be safe at any time.
