About 20% of people in Germany regularly suffer from Heartburn. Sharp pains behind the breastbone and acid regurgitation are annoying in everyday life & at night and reduce the quality of life for many. Often home remedies and tricks can already alleviate the discomfort by binding or neutralizing stomach acid.

Our tips against heartburn

1. reduce stimulants such as alcohol & cigarettes

Stimulants such as alcohol, coffee or cigarettes can cause heartburn and increase discomfort. Cigarettes reduce the production of saliva, which can cause heartburn because saliva normally wraps itself protectively around the mucous membranes of the esophagus. Alcohol irritates the esophagus and stimulates the production of stomach acid. This is a common cause of heartburn.

2. bitter substances to support digestion.

Bitters are important for our digestive organs and processes. They regulate the acidity of the stomach and stimulate the production of saliva, bile and gastric juices. Too little bitters can lead to sluggish digestion, stomach pain and heartburn. Foods rich in bitters include chicory, arugula and collard greens. Also medicinal herbs like the Wormwood herb or Dandelion contain bitter substances.

3. elevate the upper body when sleeping

For many, the symptoms occur at night, because when lying down, the stomach acid tends to flow back into the esophagus. Therefore, try to position your upper body a little higher to prevent this reflux.

4. fennel and chamomile tea

These soothe irritated mucous membranes and calm the stomach. Fruit and peppermint teas are not recommended, as they tend to irritate the mucous membranes & stomach.

5. starchy foods like white bread & potatoes.

Foods that contain a lot of starch bind the stomach acid. A well-known home remedy is also the juice of raw potatoes. This can quickly relieve discomfort.

Acute tips for heartburn

  1. Chewing gum: Chewing gum stimulates saliva production and the slightly alkaline saliva can neutralize small amounts of stomach acid in the esophagus.
  2. Eat almonds: Almonds can help bind stomach acid, relieving initial discomfort.
  3. Keeping your head elevated: This makes it harder for stomach acid to flow up the esophagus.
  4. Milk: Milk is said to help with heartburn because it can neutralize stomach acid.
  5. Drink water: Lukewarm, still water dilutes the stomach acid and leads this back into the stomach.

What is actually heartburn?

It refers to the reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus, sometimes even into the mouth. This results in acid regurgitation and burning pain behind the breastbone. Occasional heartburn is physiological and harmless, but if it occurs more often, it may be a symptom of gastroesophageal reflux disease, or GERD. However, reflux disease is usually diagnosed only when clinical symptoms are already present. The reason for reflux is the difference in pressure between the thorax and the stomach, as well as a weakening of the esophageal sphincter.

Causes of heartburn are often sumptuous & fatty meals, stimulants or Anti-Stress. These triggers can cause the stomach to produce too much acid or empty slowly. Therefore, and due to dysfunction of the esophageal sphincter, obesity, disturbed gastric emptying or other reasons, the acidic stomach acid then flows back into the esophagus and then causes the familiar symptoms.

Risk factors for heartburn include being overweight, sitting for long periods in a bent-over position, stress, poor diet or pregnancy. However, these factors can be prevented with the help of a balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle.
