Chickweed: the medicinal plant with the cooling effect

Chickweed is a long known companion in the ranks of domestic medicinal plants. In the past, it was classified among the classic lung medicinal plants and was always considered the first choice remedy for problems in the respiratory tract. Today, this spectrum has changed a little and expanded. Today, however, it is certainly not as popular as it may have been in the 19th century, but unjustly so. Recent studies even attest to its effectiveness against various molds, which would open up a whole new therapeutic direction.

What is chickweed?

Chickweed is an annual herbaceous plant that forms stems up to 40cm long. Due to its tendency to form carpets, it is also considered a ground cover and is deliberately planted by gardeners. Its leaves are oval with a slight tip and quite short stalked. It forms beautiful, star-like, white flowers that can also bloom all year long if planted in a weather-protected position. Nevertheless, if the flowers are surprised by water, they can contract protectively. Chickweed has probably been with us since the Stone Age and has shown itself to be a very adaptable plant so far. Since the plant produces a lot of seeds, several generations of plants can grow each year. Seeds that have already germinated can even produce new plants in the cold season. Due to its soil-covering properties, it inhibits erosion and protects the soil from drying out. Thus, its importance for other plant can be considered high.
