Hawthorn: natural strengthening for the heart

Hawthorn is one of the three sacred thorns in our latitudes and has a long history as a medicinal plant. Its cultural and historical importance is also emphasized by the fact that in the famous Grimm story 'Sleeping Beauty', the hawthorn is the plant that changes the fate of the young woman. In modern naturopathy, hawthorn is a very important medicinal plant of the heart, because it is actually never considered to be used incorrectly and has a very healthy effect on our central pump organ.

Facts about the hawthorn

Did you know that...

...the red berries of the hawthorn were eaten in poor times?
...Jesus' crown of thorns in Christian history is said to have been made of hawthorn?

...the native people of North America also know the hawthorn as a heart plant?

What is hawthorn?

Hawthorn is a deciduous deciduous tree with part bushy growth. It grows between two and twelve meters high. Its branches are covered with numerous thorns and it usually forms a dense crown. May to June it blooms with dense, white flowers and emits a characteristic, but not very fragrant odor. In its branches you can often find nesting red-backed shrikes, as this bird uses the hawthorn's thorns for its food storage. In September it produces its red-orange fruits, which in times of need were often used as food and made into porridge and mush.

General and medicinal properties of Crataegus

The basic knowledge

Heart invigorating

Hawthorn is heart-strengthening. It ensures that the heart muscle can beat powerfully, that the blood pumps evenly and rhythmically through the organism and that blood pressure remains stable.

Heart soothing

Hawthorn is heart calming. In nervous cardiac neuroses, it calms the heart, makes it beat evenly and strongly and ensures that stress does not throw the heart out of rhythm and it can do its daily work unnoticed.

Increasing efficiency

Hawthorn is efficiency enhancing. It helps the heart to perform the required power with less work. As a result, the heart uses less energy and oxygen and is able to generate better peak performance when needed.

Crataegus: Ingredients

Hawthorn contains a number of substances that have a positive effect on the heart.

  • Flavonoids such as rutin and quercetin
  • Proanthocyanides
  • Chlorogenic acid
  • Catechins

Hawthorn: effect for body and mind

There are now several studies on hawthorn that attest to the plant's proven effect on the heart and circulation. The heart muscle is strengthened, its activity is made more efficient and its metabolism is optimized. The result is a better running circulatory system, which is less wear and tear and more gentle on the body. However, its effect is basically considered long-term, which is why it is judged as a chronic remedy. For the overall well-being, hawthorn means strength, youthfulness and buoyancy. It is therefore often used in convalescence after long, debilitating illnesses to get the patient back on his feet. Mentally, hawthorn always means renewal and a sense of return to strength. In the same way, it strengthens self-confidence, as the supposed feeling of weakness begins to fade under a therapy with hawthorn.

Fields of application in naturopathy

[Crataegus monogyna]
Hawthorn is one of the great cardiac remedies and is widely used in naturopathy in this subject area.

Hawthorn for cardiac arrhythmias

Since hawthorn increases the contractility and improves the conduction of excitation of the nerves, it is often used as a basic remedy for cardiac arrhythmias. It also increases the stimulus threshold of the heart muscle so that small neurological impulse cannot cause an extra beat. The arrhythmia is thus stopped and the heart beats evenly and strongly, as it should.

Hawthorn for restlessness & sleep problems

Heart problems, restlessness and sleep disorders are a trio that likes to occur together. The cause is usually extraordinary loads that cause stress for people. Since hawthorn has calming and balancing effects on the heart and nervous system, it helps to better resist stress and serenity and relaxation return to the system. Man no longer feels his heart, so that worries also fade away again.

Crataegus for circulatory disorders

Some people suffer from circulatory weakness, in which the blood pressure suddenly drops. Since hawthorn supports the beating power of the heart and keeps the blood vessels elastic, it stabilizes the circulation in the long term, so that the fluctuations in blood pressure and thus the attacks of weakness disappear.

Hawthorn for blood pressure disorders

Many patients suffer from blood pressure that is too high, but also too low. Some have an increased risk of strokes, others have a lack of drive and a flat performance curve. Hawthorn harmonizes the strength of the heart and adjusts the tension of the blood vessels to the optimal level. The result is a balanced, stable blood pressure, which allows a normal everyday life without increasing the risk of secondary diseases.

Crataegus for water retention

A classic symptom of severe cardiac insufficiency is water retention in the legs, known as edema. The reason for this is that the blood is no longer moved sufficiently and the water of the blood sinks into the tissue. Since hawthorn strengthens the heart muscle and normalizes the tension of the blood vessels, the process of subsidence is slowed down and the body can break down the edema again.

Notes on the use of hawthorn

Hawthorn can be taken as a tea, a single remedy or as a component of mixed preparations. The important thing here is that it must be taken over several weeks in order to feel the first effects. In the case of chronic heart complaints, long-term treatment or recurring cures are indicated. It is taken several times a day.

Hawthorn in pregnancy & lactation

So far, there has been no cause for concern, but no direct study results are available. In the first trimester of pregnancy, very caution should be exercised, but in the second trimester, use is considered acceptable if necessary.
