Wolf's foot: rest for the thyroid gland

Wolfstrapp is a widespread native plant in our country. It loves moist areas and soils, so it is often found near rivers and streams. However, it does not like heights beyond 100m very much. Here its population then thins out very quickly. Traditionally, wolf rap is used in patients whose symptoms such as restlessness, sweating, insomnia and weight loss are related to an overactive thyroid gland. It calms the basal metabolism of the organism and takes the overstimulation out of the system again.

What is wolf's foot?

Wolftrap is a perennial herbaceous plant that grows up to 120cm high. It forms very long underground runners to ensure its survival. Its foliage leaves are coarsely serrated, the lowest at the style partly also pinnate. The small, white flowers captivate with their charming purple spots and arrange themselves in a circle around the long style of the plant. The plant is extremely popular with insects to harvest nectar. Common visitors are wasps, flies and hoverflies. Wolfstrapp is often found along riverbanks. It likes moist, humusy soils that have a rather alkaline pH. Decisive for its spread, however, is its high nutrient requirement. If soils are too lean, there is little chance of survival. It prefers partial shade rather than full sun and is considered a wetness and nutrient grower.

General and medicinal properties of Lycopus europaeus

The basic knowledge

Soothing

Wolfstrapp is calming. Its active ingredients act directly on the thyroid gland, dampening the stimulating thyroid metabolism and thus ensuring that the organism is not further stimulated and calms down.

Regulating

Wolfstrapp is thyroid regulating. It inhibits the formation of thyroid hormones by blocking the turnover of iodine. Thus, the body is less stimulated and can relax a little in the context of hyperfunction.

Decongestant

Wolfstrapp is breast decongestant. In the pituitary gland, it inhibits sex hormones that irritate women's mammary glands and thus ensures that swelling, pain and feelings of tension decrease.

Lycopus europaeus: Ingredients

Wolfstrapp contains some medicinally active constituents. These include:
  • Essential oils
  • Tannic acid
  • Gallic acid
  • Glycosides like lycopene

Wolf's foot: effect for body and mind

Wolfstrapp is a specialist among medicinal plants. Its spectrum of use is limited and strongly defined. Due to its known ingredients, it is recommended for the treatment of thyroid disorders when these are accompanied by hyperfunction. It regulates iodine metabolism and thus the formation of active thyroid hormones. This removes the hormonal cause of the hyperfunction and the symptoms can be balanced out again. Something similar happens in the area of sex hormones in the pituitary gland. Some conditions cause breast tenderness and sensitivity in this area in women. Since Wolfstrapp also has a blocking effect here, the concentration of hormones and thus the associated symptoms decrease again.

Fields of application in naturopathy

[Lycopus europaeus]
From the mechanism of action derive various applications of wolf trap which are described below:

Lycopus europaeus for hyperthyroidism

In hyperthyroidism, wolfstrapp is one of the first medicinal plants to be thought of. It inhibits the metabolism of iodine in the thyroid gland and thus the buildup of thyroid hormones. Thus, thyroid metabolism is not additionally fueled and the organ can calm down. The symptoms of hyperthyroidism decrease and the body can recover.

Wolf's foot for sleep disorders

Sleep disorders are often due to hyperfunction of the thyroid gland. The body is overstimulated and cannot switch to the regenerative relaxation phases. Sleep suffers as a result. Lycopus inhibits the excessive thyroid metabolism and causes the body to calm down again. Sleep is found more easily and can be used regeneratively again.

Wolf's foot in Graves' disease

Graves' disease is an autoimmune inflammation of the thyroid gland. In this case, thyroid metabolism increases and the patient is in hyperthyroidism. Wolfstrapp inhibits the formation of thyroid hormones by blocking the required iodine. The amount of thyroid hormones decreases and the symptoms of hyperthyroidism decrease. Thus, the organ and the patient can recover.

Lycopus europaeus for restlessness & anxiety

Many feelings of anxiety and restlessness have physical causes. Often these lie in the derailed thyroid metabolism. Wolfstrapp calms the thyroid gland and inhibits its overactivity. As a result, the body is no longer so inflamed and the feeling of restlessness disappears. Anxiety is usually a result of this restlessness and recedes at the same rate as the feeling of calm and relaxation returns.

Lycopus europaeus for heart problems

Some heart complaints are directly related to an overzealous thyroid gland. The result is arrhythmia, excessive beating and an increased pulse. Because Wolfstrapp inhibits the thyroid gland and the amount of thyroid hormones decreases, the effect on the heart also decreases. The beating frequency decreases, the heart calms down again and with it the heart complaints.

Notes on the use of Lycopus europaeus

Wolfstrapp is used in courses or over a longer period of time to regulate hyperfunction. The dosage varies depending on the vehemence of the symptoms. Mostly it is drop preparations that are applied. An application 2-3 times a day is common.

Wolffoot in pregnancy & lactation

In pregnancy, the application should always be discussed with the therapist. In principle, the use of Wolfstrapp should be avoided during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
